I believe this question is different than Eric Branner's....
We have a carpenter ant nest in a skylight window well. We rarely see any ants, but we can hear the characteristic crunching sound in the window well sides. I have contracted for quarterly treatments with a local exterminator. The exterminator has made one visit. The nest area was treated by drilling 4 holes thru the drywall (at the point of the loudest crunching sound) through which the dusting chemical was applied. Numerous other places in and outside the house were treated.
One week after treatment the nest was quiet - we thought they were gone. Then a week later they returned to the nest seemingly in greater numbers(louder, more spread out crunching). Its been one week since they came back. (it's been 3 weeks total at this point since initial treatment). My exterminator is telling me now that I have to wait 6 weeks total (3 weeks more in other words) before they will return and retreat the nest. They tell me this ant activity is normal. "The ants are spreading the poison (Delta Dust) to other nests. I have to be patient". Further, if they retreat the nest now we risk the ants moving to a new nest in the house. Also I am told the ants might develop an immunity to the poison if over applied.
My question is: Is it correct that I need to wait 6 weeks total before any retreatment? I found this exterminator in the yellow pages. I dont' see any dead ants and I have no idea if I should trust them.
Thank you. Excellent site!
