The cottage is about 30 years old, but we bought it two years ago and finished renovations last summer.
When I was painting the cupboards last summer, two very large winged slow-moving reddish-colored ants dropped down from the window area within an hour of each other (the window was closed).
We see dead carcasses (and live ants) upstairs every time we stay there. We have not seen any sawdust, which is odd (could it just be trapped in the walls or ceiling?). But we definitely can hear them rustling/clicking in the wall/ceiling of our main floor bedroom (although that area is not near the window). They are much noisier this year than last.
My husband thought if we surrounded the perimeter with diazinon (his cousin still has some "old stock"), it would kill any ants crossing over it, and starve any nest(s) out. Does diazinon not work long-term?
Part of me would like to open up the wall in our bedroom and vacuum out any ants, but I'm not sure exactly where they are, and...ugh...the mess...and the movement...I think I'd rather kill the ants first (or rather, have the exterminator kill the ants) and THEN vacuum them up...
