I have never had an ant problem...nor insects of any sort in my home and if a random one got in...the cats usually played with it until it ran screaming out or just gave up and died...occasionally they make them a treat. (gag)
Onto my problem...a few weeks ago I cleaned up my garden, which had some 6 or 7 odd cut up wood from a couple of years ago...as I picked them up..to my horror...ants emerged from every orifice and rotting piece! Not really thinking much of it...I threw them in a pile on the grass until trash day where I promptly got rid of them. I fear there is no coincidence, that I have now observed a few of these fellows in the house...not enough to be freaking out yet but concerned. Well..now I am really concerned..last week as I was watering my plants on my porch I am hearing a scraping noise, in the wood...so I am thinking..mouse stuck? Bird? hmm...so at closer inspection I see under the scraping noise is a nice amount of wood shavings littering my plants, of course, as a single mom...I am now panicking a bit..and I call my dad and he seems to concur that it may be carpenter ants...and well, quite frankly..I am very concerned that I can actually HEAR them. After reading your very informative piece, I am hoping that I can tackle this problem myself..though I am not thinking I would like to, nor am I qualified to start pulling wood down...I do not believe that there is a moisture problem, except that I water, than mist my flowers every night....uh yea, well...so if you have any suggestions...I would be very open to read and then try to eliminate this problem before my plants come crashing down...one already has...though I am hoping it wasn't from the ants..though one must wonder...can you help?
Wow that was long eh? I just thought I should be thorough in my description.
