A few inside are no big deal. Especially with you watering close to the house. Not sure about the "wood shavings" you talk about, but if the ants can set up shop right near your well-watered garden, they will.

As far as doing it yourself is concerned, sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. To be sure, follow the directions I gave to "Ants in Philadelphia," below post. It shouldn't be expensive, (if you get the right guy) and it can last all season, maybe even more.
