Moved into a 10 year old house in January and noticed small "minor" workers in the house at different locations, mostly 1st floor above garage and in garage (2 story colonial with partially finished basement)in the middle of May. Now (6/10)larger "major" workers are showing up (don't look like big reproductive females yet and nothing winged yet).
After observing activity for a few weeks, looks like I might have a nest at garage door at trim board that is rotted and under at deck plate where it connects to house where water infiltration has been an issue. When we inspected in October on hot day found past nest at this deck location that had been treated and had no activty.
The finished basement has a drop ceiling so I popped a few celing tiles last night along the deck plate and found a nest (different location than the one above about 10 feet away) in a surprising dry area w/ about 50 ants +/- that I could see. Using a hand duster I treated it with boric acid dust in the nest are but also on either side - ants appeared to be only in that one bay. There was also a crack they were using that I could see flashing from the deck side where the siding is. I also dusted that crack heavily. Some fled but had dust on them.
I plan on tearing out the siding and sheathing in the area under the deck where water has been a problem and repair it in the next few weeks as well as where the garage trim is rotted, but I am afraid I will disturb any nest and they will scatter to other areas and reestablish.
Before I demo should I get an exterminator to "blast" these areas first, or make the repairs and deal with them as I see them by vacuumming?
Another question, for the ants, as a prevetative in the past at my old house, I spray treated the foundation where the sills and siding meet the cast in place foundation wall on the outside around the perimeter of the house as well around the first floor windows and doors, including garage doors with Spectricide Carpenter Ant and Termite Killer Concentrate or Ortho's House Max Termite and Wood Destroying Insect Concentrate(formerly Ortho Klor).
I also am doing this at the new house and started in mid April about every 3 to 4 weeks.
Is this worth doing?
