First, thank you for this informative website.
And here's a bit about our ant problem.
We have a very large (3+ feet in diaemeter, 8 inches tall) nest of carpenter ants 2 yards from our back deck. The nest is righ under some trees (deciduous and evergreen). There is a constant supply of dead plant material there and the ants are loving it and the nest keeps growing. Our house is in the NW Washington state and it has been a very wet year.
I don't like to use chemicals, but I am worried about this nest growing and the ants moving into the house in large numbers. So, chemicals look like the only solution. I would like to use something that will extreminate the whole colony.
In the past, we have found carpenter ant paths in some old rotten siding, which we replaced. However I have not seen the large(carpenter) ants in the house yet. I did see a few of the smaller (1/4 inch) ants recently nearby the kitchen sink recently.
Thanks much for sharing your knowledge!
