I found a bunch of flying ants in my house tonight - I'd say about 15 or so. Not real quick. They were congregating near a light in one room. Just grabbed them with a tissue and killed them. They were black and about 1/2 inch or so long. I looked at pictures online and they appear to be male carpenter ants.
Of course, I started worrying I have an infestation. But I haven't seen any sign of carpenter ants ever in the house - been here nine years. Or even outside the house.
I am in in south central Wisconsin, and we got a ton of rain in the last month (including the nasty flooding last week). I got water in my basement (about and inch or two).
Otherwise, the house is pretty dry prior to that. It's residential area with lots of established trees and bushes. Ants, of any kind, have rarely been an issue (earwigs were bad last year - I could find a couple a day in house last year).
We have had some hot, humid weather the last couple of days too.
So, I'm wondering if I have a problem (a nest somewhere in the house), or if I'm just a victim of some swarming male carpenter ants who all just made it in my house (which seems unlikely, but that's my hope).
If I only had found a few, I wouldn't worry. But when it was 15 or so, that got me worrying.
I'd appreciate your advice on how to proceed.
