Well, the ants wouldn't destroy your walls, the moisture would.

I would suspect the walls/windows are leaking, it's a common problem. Best thing, would be to dig it out and check the walls for cracks, waterproof the walls at the same time. You can do all that yourself.

The chemicals are mostly best left to the experts. Both products you would have to buy much more than you need, besides, it's supposed to be applied by licensed exterminators. Both chemicals would cost a couple of hundred, you'd then have too much, and it does have a shelf life.

My vote would be for digging it out and fixing the cause.
