Sounds like you were Orkinized.... Did he at least LOOK at the ants (with a glass) and determine they were CAs?
And you're right, to REALLY solve the problem, you have to find out where they're coming from. Often difficult to do, in a situation like that.
I would check the outside, the gutters, see if they're full or perhaps leaking into somewhere they shouldn't be. If you have a window in theis room they could be in the window frame too.
As far as "damage" is concerned, you would have far more worry with a moisture problem - that's what does the damage. The ants only take advantage of the available moisture.
And if it's only once a year, I hardly think the the colony is that big. It might also be on the outside, with an avenue to the inside.
If you did anything, you could do a Phantom/Termidor treatment to the inside/outside to try and alleviate the problem. That is generally a once per year treatment, I do them for under $200, unless I'm treating the Pentagon or something.
If you can stick your head in the ceiling, to check for roof leaks and more signs of what's going on, that could help.
For the Phantom/Termidor treatment, I guess you know who NOT to call. Get a trusted, local independent if you need an exterminator.
And it's really no big deal...
