Hi John - you have no idea how relieved I was when I found your website ! I have spent countless hours on the web doing research on carpenter ants, not to mention the phone calls to local pest control companies, all of which have given me a gloom and doom scenario. I have literally lost sleep worrying about our carpenter ant problem. Although your website has (fortunately) put me quite a bit at ease, I still have a couple of questions for you:
First of all, we live in Eastern Canada and there is a heavily wooded area behind our house. No surprise that this is carpenter ant heaven! Every spring, we notice a few of the little brats roaming around the house. I've never literally kept count of them but for some strange reason I decided to do that this year. And maybe I shouldn't have because now I realize that we're getting more than I thought. It's now the end of June and over the past month, I've found about 20 of them. Not all at once - perhaps one on Monday, two on Thursday, one on Sunday, etc. I'm finding them in different areas of the house: perhaps one by the living room window, one in the bathroom, one in the hallway, etc. There are no signs of frass anywhere that I can find. All of the pest control companies have told us that we have a serious infestation and that, by finding 10 or 20 of them, there are probably hundreds of them in the walls.
We've had this situation for years. They always show up in late spring in numbers like I describe above. During the summer months, I may see one or two but that's about it. None during the fall or winter. What do you think ?? (and thanks again for your website. While I am still a nervous wreck, there may be some hope for me yet!). Thank you so much.
