For two summers (May through August) I had a pretty big problem with carpenter ants. (I live in Pittsburgh, PA.) They would run across my kitchen counters and floor, disappearing behind or under the counters, or down into my electric stove! The ants would get physically bigger as the summer went on. I would see at least 100 per day, throughout the day -- not just at night. (At night,of course, it was even worse.) By mid-summer, I would even begin to find some in the bathroom upstairs from the kitchen. This summer is the summer I decided I must definitley do "SOMETHING" about them. In May, as usual, I started to see the ants, although there didn't seem to be as many as "usual." In June, however -- they seem to have just disappeared! I have not come across a single ant in a month! Is it possible that after such a big problem for two years they could have just "moved on?" My fear is that they are chewing up the beams or walls, etc. of my house and just not coming out into my kitchen. I do not hear (and never have heard)the distinctive crunching sound I have read about. What should I do? (As a side question, I have noticed that my hardwood floors in my house have become quite "creaky" when walked across. The house is about 35 years old and the floors did not creak at all until the past year or so. Could this just be a coincidence, or could this have something to do with carpenter ants? As I mentioned, the fact I'm NOT seeing ants is actually making me paranoid.) My main question is whether I still need to worry about calling an exterminator to check for carpenter ants now that they seem to have disappeared. (They were SO bad, I find it hard to believe they have simply decided to leave of their own accord, since nothing about the house has changed over this period.) Thanks for any insight.
