It's possible, especially if their nest was actually on the outside. Or if the ants were in, say, the dishwasher, and conditions in that area changed. It's really hard to say.

However, since you no longer see the ants, I would hold off on any control efforts for the time being.

And the ants would never "chew up" beams without you noticing hundreds of ants. And I doubt that creaking floors would indicate an ant problem, without you seeing those multitudes of ants.
