This is a strange question but a very true story. We had seen some carpenter ants crawling into our garage and around it. Then when we cut branches from a large tree I had about 5 in the house. I wasn't concerned with these as I felt they fell off the limbs we were carrying. The garage ones I was a little more nervous on so I went looking for a nest and found it in a hollow storm damaged limb on our cherry tree. The tree actually sits back about 10 feet from our garage. My 14 year old "brainless" child apparently was trying to look into the branch and it broke off with the main nest inside of it. I was going to go ahead and dust the tree and the branch but he threw it over our fence into the neighbors yard to where i cannot get to it. Since the main nest is in that limb what happens next? Will they stay in that limb and I should just finish cutting the rest of the dead limbs away and seal the tree? I know we have carpenter ants in our other trees as well but see no nests nor any activity in our house or garage. Of course we have had enough rain to float an ark as well and continue to get 3 t 4 inches a week (Iowa.) Not really sure what I should do. An exterminator tried to talk me into an annual contract but I have no other pests and think it is ridiculous to have to spray each month. Thoughts? Suggestions? Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
