We've seen a few carpenter ants over the years -- but not usually more than one or two a day and not every day. They've been at different places in the house and also climbing the chimney outside. We had the roof redone two summers ago and believe our water issue around the flashing has been fixed. Anyway, I recently found maybe a teaspoonful of debris on the mantel (looks like ant and/or other insect skeletons, etc.) I cleaned it up and found some more the next day. I discovered that a carpenter ant was apparently "cleaning house" right above that point. There's a small hole right next to the crown molding through which he was bringing this stuff and dumping it. Since that second time, maybe a week ago, I've seen no more of it. We've never heard any of the crunching sounds people talk about. Does this sound like there's a nest in the house? We set up a treatment with one of the local companies (not really sure if they're a "biggie", but they haven't started yet. Now that I've found this site, I'm a little concerned about unnecessarily putting chemicals in the house, and I did plan on getting more information about what chemicals they were planning to use. Thanks for any input.
