I am not sure what type of ant I am dealing with. About two weeks ago, the phone company came out to bury the phone line from my house to the box on the road. At that time it was (and has been for the last month) rainy. I live in the san juan Mts of colorado, and july and august are wet months, with rains sometimes daily. Anyway at that time he told me he thought I had termites, which of course freaked me out. Upon close investigation and reasearch on the internet along with examination under a magnifying glass, I am certain that they are ants. Several times after that I have seen ants(lots of them) coming out from under the porch, some have wings some do not. These ants are tiny, maybe 4mm. I have also found in the house a few(2-4 a day) bigger black ants, these ants are about 1/4 of an inch maybe a little bigger. I have also seen some of these bigger black ants along the fench post and on the outside wall of the house, but not many. Yes I live in a heavy wood area( it is the Mountains), everything around is forest.
After reading your web site I am pretty sure I just need to relax, however I am wondering if the ants coming from under the porch are the same as the bigger black ones? As in carpenter ants and nest? The ones from the porch, under maginfication seem lighter color..light brown/red. The cabin down the way( which is vacent most of the time) also has these small ants coming from under the foundation at certain times of the day.
