Hard to say, especially since I don't know EXACTLY what kind of ants these are... And they don't necessarily need "moisture" to survive, sometimes just a dead air space is enough, depending on circumstances.

The "pieces" are probably just what ants die within that colony. They will just take the dead bodies and eject them from the colony habitat, along with their other trash. They don't mess around with any fancy funerals....

Your exterminator doesn't sound that experienced - or interested, either. We all see ejecta from ant colonies all the time. I see it almost every day, in some place I go to.

If you get an outside perimeter spray, make sure it's with Termidor. For the inside, try Gourmet ant bait. It's my favorite.
