I want to thank you for putting together such a great site. I used to design websites for a living and I know how much work goes into putting together so much information. The amount of good quality content you have here is unbelievable.
I just purchased my home a few months ago. We do have ants in and around the house quite often, but only occasionally. In other words, we may see one or two almost every day, but hardly ever see more than five or ten at the same time. We do live in Alabama about three hours or so inland from the Gulf, so hot, humid weather is normal here and, therefore, so are insects (and ants for sure). So, I haven't really thought much about the ants. Seeing one or two a day around the kitchen hasn't really raised any red flags. Also, seeing streams around the outside of the home (like on my concrete driveway) hasn't really caused much concern either because ants are everywhere around this part of the country. Maybe I should be a little more concerned after reading through your site. I don't want to be too passive, but I certainly don't think I have any kind of crazy infestation in my home.
The one thing that I am concerned about tonight, is that I just found about 20 or so swarmers in my daughters room upstairs. Of course, I didn't know what they were a couple of hours ago, but after doing some research I am 100% confident they are carpenter swarmers (dark color, thin thorax, legs up front, bent antennae, etc...). It seems to me after reading through all of the info I've found that this is probably a seasonal issue. Like I said, I have seen ants here and there, but nothing like this before...never 20 or so in one spot. And never swarmers, just workers.
I do have a water problem, but it is short term. The air conditioner has been backing up in my drip pan upstairs (very close in proximity to my daughters room in the attic) for about a week. I have tried to fix it a few times, but the main drain is pretty clogged. So, I will be running a new one this weekend. For now (and for about a week now) the drain pan is pretty full and the emergency drain line is dripping out into a bucket in my garage. Could the swarmers be attracted to that? I have inspected the attic and crawlspaces and do not see any damaged wood, moisture of any kind, or ants either for that matter. Why else would I see so many swarmers in one spot in one corner of one room of my house?
