Thank you for taking the time to provide real information about carpenter ants.
I live in Wheaton, IL. After reading your article today, I was reminded of a young man who knocked on my front door on a hot muggy day in August of this year. I believe he is sitting on the fence deciding if he wants to be an honest exterminator or a successful salesman.
When I answered the the door he was wearing a uniform shirt with a company logo and introduced himself as an exterminator who was in the neighborhood. He said he just finished eliminating a serious carpenter ant problem for one of my neighbors a few houses to the south on the street behind me.
When I asked for the street number he could not remember the actual number. When I asked how I can determine if I have an ant problem he indicated that I would see their nests in my lawn. When I asked what do the nests look like he gave a brief description that looked just like the nest we happened to find at the edge of the sidewalk in front of my house. I asked if this meant my house had carpenter ants and he said no but when they are this close they will eventually enter my house. When I asked what I can use to kill the ants in the nest to stop their movement toward my house he suggested a powder because a liquid would not be effective in reaching the bottom of their deep nests.
I thanked him for the information and advice and indicated I would contact him if I find a carpenter ant problem in my house. He left the area without giving me a business card.
He was a nice young man who seemed to have good knowledge of the subject and I hope he chooses the exterminator side of the fence.
What do you think? Is he on the fence or just a bad salesman.
Thank you again for all your information.
