Just bought a house back in January. The house was a foreclosure and was unoccupied for over a year, 17 months to be precise. When we bought it we had to have someone come and unwinterize the house because everything was shut down. The pipes were drained and flushed with anti freeze. We had the house inspected although we were not required becasue it was a forclosure but we didnt want to get into a mess. At the time there was no sign of wood damage according to pest control inspection and the only damge to wood was to some outer boards on the deck and there is an addition that roof needed to be fixed, but was told there was inrelated to insects. We were paid for the roof and had it fixed and were told that the wood was solid and there was no damage. I honestly believe that there is no damage because if there was then the guy would definately want to fix it because that would of meant more money for him plus he is someone who we have known for over 13 years.
Now it is May and for the last 3 weeks we have been seeing big black ants in various spots all over the house. The bathroom, the room where the addition is and a few in the front room. There is usually never more than 10 to 15 a day and sometimes only like 6. They are never together and it is usually just a random ant roaming around on the floor or ceiling. I have tried to not panic. I try not to squish them and leave there scent anywhere. I am always trying to clean where ever i see them traveling. I am wondering if this sounds like a seasonal problem or something more serious. I could not possbily find all the whole in the house and cracks in the house, it would take me a year to fill them all so i now i will have occasional pests. I also have around 7 trees in my yard that are in close proximity to the house one tree i could pull the branches in through my bathroom window. My husband says we could hire an exterminator if i am that bothered but i am afraid that wont actually solve problem just subside for a little bit.
We live in upstate NY area. Oh yeah found a huge dead ant in bathroom one morning when this all started that i think came in through windown because husband forgot to put screen in. It did appear that it had wings but had fallen off when it died, the ant was close to an inch long. Sorry this is so long but i am at a loss what to do now and i am trying to not panic.
Thank you for any advice you could give to me
