A bit of background Ė I have a 60 year old Cape Cod style house with wood siding on a shaded lot in NE Ohio. The wood siding isnít in the best shape but we had it painted about three years ago so itís pretty stable. Two years ago, we found a big pile of cellulose insulation mixed with dead ants and frass coming from the basement ceiling along the south side of the house Ė I could actually see the carpenter ants moving the insulation out from a crack. We called the national company whose name starts with an ďOĒ and they did the treatment where they drilled holes in the wall and ďbombedĒ the basement and that seemed to get rid of the nest. Of course, I had to sign a contract and Iíve been paying them bi-monthly ever since then to spray the interior and exterior of the house. We have not had more than a few in the house at any given time in the spring since then, but we canít seem to stop them from trying to make new nests underneath the siding. I have had to call the ďOĒ man once a week for the past month because I keep finding a new spot where a bunch of them are trying to get in, or have successfully gotten in and are inviting all of their buddies in as well. Itís usually where the siding meets the brick foundation, near the bottom of the house, but itís also been up near the gutters as well. Iím frustrated because Iím paying big bucks for this service and the ants are still coming back! Iím a person who doesnít like to have lots of chemicals sprayed around my home, so this is becoming torture to me! I just want the ants to go away, and Iím starting to feel like we are going to have to completely remove all of the siding to see whatís really going on. There are always ants at any given time, especially at this time of the year, crawling around on the exterior of my house, except during the coldest winter months. Today they seem particularly interested in my side door frame and Iíve killed close to 10 of them in the past couple of days in that area. The neighbors donít seem to have the same problems we do which makes it all the more frustrating.
Iím starting to lose sleep over this and no longer enjoy being out in my yard because Iím constantly scanning the siding for more ants. Iíd appreciate any advice you can offer!
