Ok, I'll say it: RELAX! The ants won't hurt you. Keep repeating that. Your fears are unfounded. Gulp down your panic and think about everything.
The ones you see "all over" are probably coming in from "all over" and might only be seasonal or weather-related. This problem can usually be taken care of with a Termidor/Phantom treatment. Seek out a pro to do this for you. Skip the biggies, look for a local good guy.
The ones in the bathroom might be more problematic. There might be a moisture issue here, and often shower surrounds are one of them. Chemicals are NOT going to solve this - fixing the problem will solve it. Chemical treatments will only be temporary. Just keep that in mind for the future AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT! Eventually, when you do address this problem, be sure to have a shop-vac handy for any ants you may find. Then FIX the reason why they were there. Very simple - that's all there is to it. Not saying it's inexpensive, but it's certainly the best way to do it. Save up your money for this part of the project, you have plenty of time. The ants themselves are really absolutely harmless, carry or vector no diseases and the "damage" you find will probably be more a result of the moisture than the ants. They're only taking advantage of the moisture - which is why you have to eliminate the problem to get any real results.
Go about all this in careful, studied manner, WITHOUT any sort of panic and DON'T listen to any scare stories by friends or other exterminators - they're not constructive at all. Every situation is different and NONE of them are scary - I've seen them all.
