Hello, This is my first time posting to this board. To give you some history. I live in Boulder, Colorado. We live in 8 apt. condo complex, that was built in 1982. We have all wood siding.. Last year in October 2008, our naive home owners;s association decided to change the outside landscaping..
We are located on ground level.. In years past we had the occasional ant foragers. We lived here for over 15 years.. The HOA dug up all the bushes and grass and plants we had outside our building..
They put next to our ground level windows a, think white sheeth, and left hole openings in them so they could plant little plants..Around our building and its windows are these small plants and they put down small rocks that cover the entire plants and our windows and foundations.. Beyond that is a sidewalk and then they changed the landscaping to put down brown mulch and lots of it...
Early in May, I was in my room when I noticed a swarm of them in my room and on the outside foundation, the next day I sprayed raid and they so far haven't come back. These were the black ants, I am assuming they were Carpenter Ants.. Between May and June 1st, I noticed black ants in our condo,, at least 3 or 4 each day, they REALLY FREAKED ME OUT IN MY HOME...I thought they were foragers,, so on June 1st, I got tired of this and found a small colony in my roommates bedroom near the baseboard near the floor..
I sprayed Raid and closed up as much as I could with paper towels and haven't had any problems since.. I did noticed a small hole outside that was next to the buildings gutters, that could of been the entry point. I sealed that area as much as I could with plastic from newspapers.. I have also around our part of the building under the wooden slats have put or stuffed in plastic bags and such, so as to prevent further entry...
I WAS NEVER THIS PARANOID ABOUT ANTS UNTIL THIS YEAR, WHEN LAST YEAR OUR HOA CHNAGED THE LANDSCAPING..

(((I would like to note that before I sealed up the small colony in my roommates room, I saw two small winged reproductives, I killed them with my foot..

AND AFTER I KILLED THEM AND THE COLONY WAS CLOSED UP ABOUT 2 HOURS LATER NEAR OUR WINDOWS I SAW A HUGE WASP TRYING TO GET OUTSIDE, BUT UPON CLOSER EXAMINATION, I NOTICED THAT THIS WAS A QUEEN I BELIEVE, SHE WAS HUGE... I caught her in a bug catcher and took her outside and killed her..

Since then in our home we have knock on wood no problems since June 1st with any ants, except that I still see some around the small rocks near our bedroom windows, they are not the black ants, but small brown ants...
I would like to note that at about June 8th, our HOA sent out a pest control company that sprayed around our entire building and sprinkle some ant pellets, I have noticed that the black carpenter ants don't like the ant pellets bait, but the small brown ones to.. They sparyed our entire foundation, and then the next day, we got some rain, and I am worried that it got washed away....
Ever since this happened, when the black ants invaded my room and my roommates room, I have sprayed our entire foundation at least once every 3 or 4 days with RAID... I am wondering if this overkill and if it rains Do I need to reapply RAID again????I HAVE NEVER BEEN PARANOID ABOUT ANTS BEFORE, UNTIL THIS YEAR WHEN OUR HOA CHANGED THE LANDSCAPING TO MAKE IT ZEROSCAPING, SO THAT THEY COULD SAVE ON WATER BILLS,, I LIKED MULCH BEFORE THIS SUMMER, NOW I HATE IT...

MY OTHER QUESTION IS, with the small rocks around our entire building and the BROWN MULCH being about 6 feet away, should I be worried about another ant infestation this summer??????
DO ANTS HATE TO CRAWL OVER SEMI SMALL ROCKS TO GET TO OUR WINDOW????? IS THE WHITE SHEETTH THEY PUT DOWN ON THE GROUND BEFORE PUTTING THE ROCKS DOWN AND COVERING THE DIRT, WILL THAT HELP AS WELL?????

SORRY, IF I SEEM MENTAL ABOUT THIS, BUT I WAS NEVER LIKE THIS IN THE 14 YEARS WE HAVE LIVED HERE, UNTIL THEY CHANGED THE LANDSCAPING,, ANY INFORMATION THAT YOU COULD PROVIDE WOULD BE EXTREMELY HELPFUL..

THANK YOU..

Melissa Chapman

This has made me so PARANOID that every day I check our side of the building to make sure there are no swarms of ants, I was never like this..
