Log homes CAN be a problem, but not always... Depends on many factors that I can't tell unless I were to make a personal inspection, but the amount you've seen can just be foraging workers. NBD as long as it remains thus.

Get the roof fixed - and don't let them put a roof on TOP of the old roof, get it removed and replaced. More expensive, but it's better that way.

Unless you see more I would wait until after the roof is replaced before you do any treatment.

You can have nesting ants without seeing that many - it depends on where they are.
