Just for some background, I've had a long bad history with carpenter ants. I live in Massachusetts. The previous owners of my house caulked the weep holes in the windows of a 3 season porch and the ants moved in ate through the corner posts. After that (about 6 years ago) the outside wall had to be replaced.
Last year they started eating the front support board of my shed. This year I found a couple of rotted trees they were eating in the back yard. One had fallen and the other I pushed over with my hands.
I've also found many small winged ants recently in the pool.
I saw them marching from the back yard to my house where the 3 season porch is and put a ton of terro ant bait on the trail and I thought that would take care of them.
A couple of weeks later we found them pushing their dead ant friends on the floor from inside the wall next to my chimney (opposite side of the house from the porch but close to the shed) Someone had suggested drione dust but I am having trouble finding it anywhere.
Is there a viable alternative to drione dust?
Is there any other treatments that you would suggest?
I do have an exterminator (found him through ipco) that I have used that would charge $250 for a treatment. Would that be the best course of action?
Thanks very much for your help,
