This Spring we started getting carpenter ants in our upstairs bathroom (colonial house in Michigan, built in 2005). Usually a few per day. Then started getting them in adjoining bathroom, usually a few per day. Totally freaked out and our 3 kids were paranoid, so called one of the "Big" companies to come out. They put dust in the walls of one bathroom, sprayed outside. Started seeing more in the bath that wasn't dusted. Came for second visit, dusted walls in second bath, did Termidor on exterior, now we're seeing them in the other bath again. It's like Laurel and Hardy or something. Is this exterminator just making things worse? Carpenter ants are absolutely everywhere outside our house. We live about 15-20 feet from a ravene with all kinds of dead wood and water. Is this whole thing just futile? Our biggest concern is structural damage if they have nests in the walls of our bathrooms. How do we know if we have an actual nest or more or if they just find their way into the moisture-ridden baths because they like it there? We found one gigantic one dead in the carpet and the "Big" company exterminator said we definitely have a nest if we have one that big in our house. Another concern is having to disclose this problem when and if we sell the house on the disclosure statement. It's enough to freak anybody out. Any advice is much appreciated and if you have the name of a reputable exterminator in the Southeast Michigan area.
