I've found your site very informative - thanks! I have had carpenter ant issues for a few years now. My house is 5 years old - a bi-level with woods on two sides of the lot. I killed off a bunch in my front porch piller last year- they dragged all their eggs out - I caulked it up and repainted it and haven't noticed any problems there. Every year I also see them in the spring in my house - I've always put out terro and they seem to go away (upstairs kitchen area etc), but linger in my basement (finished) maybe seeing 5-15 per day. I've seen a few winged ones in the house this year which I know is probably a sign of a nest in my house. I finally found them trailing in a couple of spots in my laundry room (unfinished part of basement). They're going behind drywall on one trail and up into the subfloor beneath my tub upstairs on another trail (saw lots more once I found these trails). I can see the entire subfloor beneath that tub and see no water issue - both spots are by an exterior wall, but again I see no visible issue and there is no plumbing behind the drywall spot they're going to - just a wall void above the cement wall (3 ft ish - bi-level home). Do I need to get that area checked (tub etc)? Should I be worried about water damage somewhere? cause I can't find any.
I am seriously considering hiring an exterminator, I am obviously not doing the right things on my own. I live by Grand Rapids Michigan if you know of any good ones. I got a referral for one, but he said he'd only be spraying outside ($90 per visit) and if the nest is inside that seems like not enough right? Another guaruntees not to see ants for a year -spray inside and out (behind shutters etc sounded very thorough) and dust where I've seen them trail. They're $316 and they'll come back for free for 1 year if you see any ants. All the others were even more than that. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks,
