Sudden Ant Migration

A friend and I walked into his house, and 1 hr later we found thousands of black ants traveling from over the door, down the wall, across the hall, and down the stairs. It was a flow 15 cm wide, and it extended 6 or 7 m when we found it. It was absolutely surreal. His backyard is a wooded area, but the flow started (or ended) at his front door, which leads to the street. They weren't attacking anything. They were just... traveling. Has anyone ever heard of this? Please help us solve this mystery! Thanks!
