Hello, we live in Michigan and moved into a new home in fall 2008. It is a new subdivision that actually has a "wetland" between two roads so we have about 50 feet of trees between ours and the house behind us. No other houses on either side yet, so all trees. Last spring we had a minor invasion of ants for a few weeks where we found anywhere from one to half a dozen most days all over the house. One consistent area was our mast bath which is in the corner of the house so it has two outside walls. Well they were gone after that. Then again this year we started getting them a few weeks ago, just in that bathroom. Just a couple here and there so I attributed it to the weather. It had been really warm for a few days and then got cold the day we saw them. Things were pretty clear for a few days and then we have seen a few here and there, but the bathroom hadn't had any activity for really a week. Then all of a sudden this week we had a hot day of near 80 when it had been in the 50's or so. It just so happened my wife left a glass of peach juice on the bathroom counter about an inch or so full. When I got home there was at least 50 ants in that glass, mostly drowned, with a few scurrying a round. Well it's been several days and I haven't seen more than one or two in there since, but now again today my wife forgot and left a glass of juice (this time empty) on the bathroom counter and after a few hours came home to around ten ants on the glass and around the vanity. I know they are coming from an opening between the vanity and the shower (there is a perpendicular wall with the water supply between them). I find no evidence of water leaks, so do they have that good of a sense of smell and could just be from outside? Or should I give an exterminator a call? I thought about the boric acid method with some juice or something, but I don't want to just be inviting more ants from outside.
