John, may be I was a bit ahead of myself, so allow me to ask a few basic questions:

Are all black winged ants an indication of carpenter ants? Or do all swarming ants have wings?

For carpenter ants, the unwinged majority (the works, I assume) are still kind of big?

The winged ants I found are around 0.3 to 0.4 inches (8mm to 1 cm) not measuring the wings, just from head to the end of the body. The unwinged ants are much smaller. The 1cm long ant is 1 of the bigger ones.

I've found winged ants of 2 head types. 1 with a head smaller than the middle section. 1 with a head about as big as the middle section (in terms of width, at least). The small headed 1 is smaller in general size than the bigger headed 1.

Are carpenters supposed to be bigger? Especially winged ones?
