Let me start out by saying this site is a huge wealth of information. Itís nice to see there are honest people out there performing a service these days that will save the customer a buck if they can direct them to the proper solution.
Occasionally for the past 2 summers when I am sitting on my front porch I would hear a slight crunching noise that appeared to come from behind my siding above my front door just below my porch roof. Last year I pulled a few siding panels and didn't see anything.
Just tonight right around dusk the noise got pretty loud. I decided to pull the top piece of siding again. The noise was louder. I figured I would cut a piece of the thin foam board out for inspection. The old wood siding behind it looked fine but I noticed holes in the foam board.
After further dissection of the piece of foam I found what appeared to be carpenter ants. I found 3 in a 1x1 section of foam and what appeared to be larvae. The larvae were small and didn't move and actually appeared dead.
This concerns me because I can still hear the little buggers back there. Should I call a professional or attempt something on my own? If I found a nest in a wall it would seem straight forward but these guys are in the foam. I didn't hear anything in other areas outside the house but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Should I expect to pay and arm and a leg? I am nervous about the damage that could be done but I am relatively handy and could do some of the work myself. Having a small child in the house and a small dog also leaves me concerned about chemicals.
