I know that according to the "book" my territory is not included in the Brown Recluse area. But they are now also in Florida. I have pictures of the spider and it is very eay to identify it. I know of a person in Miami (that is not in the area either) that was killed by one. I also know of a person in Lake Placid that was bitten by one and had a lot of problems with his hand that lasted months.
If you give me an email address I can send pictures where it is clearly seen the fiddle type of torso.
Beside the water, sugar and timbor solution, later I also used an sprayer to spray all the accesible attic (some areas have insulation), including the infected area at a rate of 1 pound per gallon (coarse spray). I also used a mix of 50% antifreeze in some areas to improve penetration inside the wood.
For the Brown Recluse I used a pyrethrin fogger 0.05% with other active ingredients (Hot Shot for bedbugs and flea that covers 4000 cu feet per can and used the 3 cans), they were placed in the attic and garage. Of course, this may not be enough. I will be going to Miami next week for good traps to place in the attic. I left the house for 3 days at that time though it is safe to enter after 2 hours according to the label of the product.
I also made 1 1/4 inch openings all around the aluminum barrier (4 feet apart) that makes the sofit and placed the Timbor mix there also. The purpose was to get into the accessible area or the wood I was not able to access with the sprayer. This is the area where the antifreeze mix was placed mostly. I prepared the apertures in such a way that I can take them for further fumigation with other products if necessary, that is why I thought of Termidor. I know it is for outside use but it does not say it can not be used in attics.
What about Cyonara?
Why I am doing this?
Because I do not trust the exterminators in the area I have talked to. One of them gave me an estimate for the spiders of $400 (only for placement of traps) and no garantees... This person was playing with my fears.
Before I bought the house, the previous owner made a fumigation with Termidor for underground termites. They charged a lot for the treatment of the front door area. I have not seen any perforation in the area that may indicate that they went into the cemented area at the door or signs of soil removal anywhere... you know the underground termites will return (so far I have found no signs), but before it happens I will make trench treatment all around in the winter.
I do not know if it is the economical situation but they are trying to make easy money over and over on me (I am a 64 years old person). The repairs I have seen in the house before me are very lausy with violations of the codes.
Now you know why I am trying to do it myself. It is not a matter of money. Even if it is not perfect it will be better than what I have seen so far.
You seems to be a nice an honest person, but not everybody is the same way.
