I should mention, we also had a leaking shower faucet which we fixed (it had probably been leaking for a month this summer). This was leaking above the bathroom where I found the winged ants. That bathroom door is kept closed; but I bet that doesn't matter.
If there are winged ants, isn't there nest almost for sure nearby or in the house? Especially if the door is closed and the window doesn't open. I can't find any ants on the outside of the house in that area and I've looked and looked in the past (just around and after sunset).
Could there be nests elsewhere in the house where there hasn't been water damage or where there isn't moisture? I'm guessing from reading your information, probably not.
Thanks for any feedback. I'm itching and staring nervously at the ceiling as I read this. (And pondering the cost of tearing off the roof and all the walls to clean everything out in our 1962 house). These creatures have tortured me and followed me since I was a toddler living in a house where they'd infested the sawdust insulation in the walls!
