We took possession of a woodsy, eastern Ontario tri-level with your dreaded cathedral ceiling one year ago. The previous people hoarded wood under the deck and didn't have gutters. (The roof is wide, deep and shallow angled) In the spring I spotted a fly (black colour) swarm in my bedroom window. We had a huge swarm coming out of the ceiling there. (the entire house is pine ceilings). There was dust at the deck door and flies there too. We went on a murderous chemical spree in the swarm locations. Prior to the house "closing", we had the old owners remove the wood under the deck. So I don't know if the queen would have been there. But from then until now I have seen only one ant(in the basement) and no flyers. Yesterday I saw one fly in one of the windows. Should I go on another murder spree? I surmise that the under-deck woodpile was the point of entry and possibly held the queen? (Picture rain pouring off the roof onto a rotting pile of wood...something our inspector might have warned us about)
I so appreciate all the information, common sense and good neighbourliness offered here...Bless you all.
