This is a little long because I want to cover it all.
We purchased our home a little over 2 years ago. Before we moved in the house sat vacant for about 2 years. When we moved in it came with an older model dishwasher. I ran the dishwasher empty to clean it. When it was done I opened it up and noticed on the drain part a bunch of black stuff about 1/2" thick. At first it looked like coffee grinds, turns out it was chopped up ants. I'm usually not squimish about bugs but this totally wigged me out. So that night we went and purchased a new dishwasher and had it installed a day or two later. When they pulled out the old dishwasher I was expecting to find a nest or something. We found nothing. I checked the area for water damage and found none. Anyways...the ant problem went away temporarily. After really heavy rains (especially the spring) we would again have some ants in the house, never a lot (sometimes 5 or 6 at once) but they were always to be found by the dishwasher. The only pesticide control that we ever used were ant traps (my husband swears they work, I'm not a believer). However recently it has been a lot worse. We are constantly finding ants (this time all throughout the house not just in the kitchen) in larger numbers than normal (not unusual for the dirty dishwasher to be have at least 10 ants in it when you open it up...they are never in a clean dishwasher though). My husband wants to call in a exterminator, I'm not keen on someone spraying chemicals willy-nilly in my home (we have 2 children under the age of 4). I have found if I pour a couple cups of vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher it seems to deter them slightly. On a side note, I live in NW Pennsylvania and we have had a very cold winter...I don't know if this makes a difference. Any suggestions/recommendations you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
