I wrote the message below a few days ago, and I have a few more questions.
My husband and I bought a house in Federal Way, Washington about 2 years ago and last spring we noticed we were seeing a few carpenter ants a day. When the weather got colder we stopped seeing them at all. Now that it is spring again they are back. Last year and up until yesterday they were always about the same size (big ones) and now I am seeing a few of the big ones a day and yesterday and today a bunch of smaller ones, they looks just like the big ones just considerably smaller. Last year, for the few months that we would find them in the house, we'd see none some days and up to 10ish all in one day. Again as the weather got colder they stopped and we didn't see any for about 6 months. Now since it is spring for about the last month (especially this last week) we are seeing anywhere from 2-15 daily. Again I am seeing smaller ones now (as of the last few days), but still some of the bigger ones too. We had 2 exterminators come out last year and take a look, Orkin said to treat, we got a second opinion from a smaller local company and this gentleman said treating wasn't necessary, especially if things die down when it gets colder, which they did stop coming. Now that they are back I am wondering if seeing the amount we are seeing in our home is in fact normal and if it is normal to see different sized ones. I have not seen any sawdust piles, no water damage, and we do have mulch basically all around our house (thank you people who sold us the house). Any advice would be appreciated!
First thank you very much taking the time to answer the questions above the other day! It is soooooooooo nice to have someone to ask these questions to that is not trying to just scare me into a monthly pest care plan! Now for the additional questions...
So as mentioned above, last spring/summer and thus far this spring, up until a week ago, the ants were always about the same size, bigger ones. Now, as of the last about week I am seeing more ants a day, not only that but they are a lot smaller. I know that you replied that it does not matter what size they are, I'm just curious as to why all the sudden they would be a lot smaller? I guess I am just worried that maybe this is indicative of a nest in the home that had babies and these are the baby ants... sigh I'm just worried.
Next, also as mentioned above, we'd see from 0-10ish a day last spring/summer until the weather got colder, then we saw none for about 6 months. Now that it is spring again, we initially started seeing 2-3 a day and for the last week I've been getting up every morning to about 15 scattered about in our daylight basement rec room (again for the last week mostly the small ones). My question is, at what point should I start to think "man, this is just too many carpenter ants to be seeing a day for ___ ( insert period of time)"? By the way, this week has been by far the warmest weather we have had all year. Also another interesting things to mention is most of the time the ants I see are like half dead, meaning they are laying they in dead looking balls but when I pick them up to dispose of them they start moving a little.
Again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for you time and knowledge!
