They enter your house because it's THERE. They wander around, food or no, and when they decide to leave, they leave. Unless, of course, you catch and kill them.

As far as setting up a home in your home, it's always possible. This can happen and you might never know about it. You could live in that house for 30 years, never see an ant and have an ant nest for all of those 30 years.

You would literally have to wipe out every tree, bush blade of grass, every living thing for hundreds of yards around your house and you might STILL see a carpenter ant(s) every once in awhile.
