Sorry. Been very busy with ants.... Doesn't have to be wet, how 'bout "hot?"
If you caulk it, they'll just find another way. Think "border fencing." Like Gov Neopolitano said, "Show me a 50 foot wall and I'll show you a 51 foot ladder!" LOL
For ants, the best thing is a non-repellent. That would be Termidor.
Have the exterminator apply Termidor to the outside. It's generally a once-per-season application. And no, you don't normally need continuing pest control, unless you have continuing problems. I don't treat my own house on a regular basis, just when I need it.
Termidor is nice that way. Non-intrusive for us AND the ants, it is just dynamite for social insects.
If the exterminator doesn't know what it is, or insists on HIS program(s), find another exterminator. Forget the biggies, get a trusted, local guy.
Forget the baiting, it just isn't easy to predict what they'll take. There are HUNDREDS of ant baits on the market, none of them work all the time, and some of them work none of the time. Termidor comes as close to 100% as anything I've seen in the last 45 years. And it doesn't hurt you and I.
