First - THANKS for easing the panic! Your advice saved me a call to the Exterminator, where I knew I was gonna get taken for a ride.
Typical story. We have a yearly visit from CA's. They start showing up about the end of March to mid April, drive us nuts for a few weeks, then taper off to nothing by mid May.
This year, we got a bunch of them in our kitchen cupboards, and in a large tupperware bowl (covered) we use for storing sugar. I'd bet we'd see 10-20/day, and there were a bunch in the sugar bin. I got a tube of Combat Ant Gel (Fipricil), and they immediately went for the bait. By morning it was all consumed, so I reapplied. Ants were seen staggering around for a few days, till the numbers almost went to zero. A few days ago, we started seeing just a few of them on a wall in an adjoining room. A day or two later, they were gone. What we DID see, and 'I admit if freaked me out a bit, was a few really large winged ants, maybe 3/4" in length. All were dead or dying. The last few days, we see none. It appears that the ants show up with a fast increase in temperature outside. It was a bit hot and muggy when we saw the ants first. In previous years we always had a lot of CA's running around our sidewalk - this year, none at all. Possible that I managed to kill off a nest in a nearby tree?
Lets say for the sake of the discussion that there is a colony somewhere in our house. (wood frame, cedar siding, finished basement) Would we see CA activity during the winter months? We have never seen one during the winter.
Thanks again for the sanity!
