"Extensive damage?" Not likely. For that to happen, you'd likely see HUNDREDS of ants on a daily basis. And even then, the problem would be moisture, not necessarily the ants. The ants would be the symptom of the problem.

You can have ants nesting somewheres within your house, for years and never know about it. We run into this all the time when doing additions or renovations to houses.
