To stop them from returning, you'll have to fix the reason they're there. It's probably some kind of moisture problem, so I would get that fixed before you do any exterminating. If you discover ants in the course of your repairs/alterations, use a shop-vac to get them.

If you fix it right, you won't need an exterminator.
