We are in the process of buying a home in Port Townsend, Washington and have found clear indications of carpenter ants in the house while inspecting the unfinished basement. Specifically, there are ten or more places along the entire length of an east facing wall with dead carpenter ants, some wood chip and insulation bits in the insulation above our heads, along the sill plate. They look sort of like little garbage chutes. No live ants were seen in either the basement or in the house (to our knowledge). We are getting mixed signals as to whether this is a serious problem (our inspector noted - "no immediate action required")and I'm having some difficulty finding real answers that will influence whether we continue the purchase the home or not. Any observations or suggestions would be most appreciated.
