The ants could be hiding in the insulation. Sometimes insulation is "bad" - when it hold moisture. In a case like that they can be there and cause no damage - but you won't know until you pull the insulation down.

That would be my advice, pull out the insulation to get a look-see. Could be nothing, could be trouble. Don't put it back until you determine if there's a moisture problem (probably is) wait through all 4 seasons before you do anything.

If you don't pull out the insulation you won't know. Kinda like marrying a woman in a Chador....
