The fact that they're inside in the cold weather may mean you have a nest in or near your closet.
Carefully remove what you have in the closet, inspect everything closely. You may well find it! Use a shop-vac to get them, forget the sprays.
Also on the "suspect" list would be a hollow door. Is the closet door hollow? Most interior doors are, nowadays. If it is, they will often make a home in there.
Do a little detective work (NO PANIC) and see what you can dig up. You can probably do all this by your lonesome too! Hubby will be proud!
