I am so happy I found this site. We just bought this house, and have had bugs everywhere (probably because it sat vacant for awhile.) I'm not too concerned about spiders and silverfish, but we have started seeing more and more carpenter ants as spring rolls in, which started to concern me.
3 days ago, we saw them swarming on the house; probably the mating swarm, from what I've read - lots of winged and unwinged ones on the side of the house, right by the roof.
We have a carport that was finished and turned into a spare room. It was done by a DIY carpenter who didn't try very hard; there is lots of very shoddy carpenter work all over the house. We recently had rain for 8 days straight and water started dripping from the ceiling in the finished carport room. Ugh!
From what I've read on your wonderful site, I'm guessing we have a lot of ants in the roof of the carport room, because obviously there is a lot of moisture there, if water drips on to the ground.
I'm guessing I need to refinish that roof, at least over the carport area. We just drained our savings to buy this house, so that certainly doesn't sound appealing! What do you think? How can I make sure I don't have a nest or nests in the house? The swarming on the side of the house, combined with knowing we have a big moisture problem, really alarmed me. Thank you!
