Some never leave, or you might not see them, they are nocturnal. And they won't go outside in the winter.

Before you destroy the drywall, pick up a stethoscope (they're cheap) and see if you can hear them. They make a sound like crinkling cellophane.

And save the "hole" you cut out, a wallboard guy will use that to fix your hole.
