PT wood should be fine. And if you only remove SOME of the panels, you'll probably find that the ants will move to other panels that are still there, so I would keep them all off.

Other than what you have done, I can only recommend the Termidor treatment. Hubby sounds pretty resourceful, my wife would like to marry him....

Unfortunately, I don't (personally) know an exterminator close to you, but if your husband wants to do the Termidor treatment himself, contact me by email and I'll go through it with you.
