Great website! Wish I had seen this awhile ago. Started noticing many carpenter ants in my driveway a 2-3 years ago and around other areas outside. Also saw them climbing foundation walls but don't know where they went. Started using store purchased baits and sprays (particularly under siding) Tracked some of them to a maple that had suffered ice damage several years ago) in the front yard (probably one of the locations). Talked to a local exterminator (who had only been working for the company for a year)They talked about baiting etc. Had one of the branches cut off last year because of concern about possibly breaking off because of the damage. Wanted to treat the tree in some way before this was done but the tree guy found any early opening in his schedule and did it when I wasn't home. Obvious hole in tree where ants were. Another company sprayed the tree area with some kind of spray to help seal the hole. The guy that cut the branch said tons of ants came out while they were cutting. I continued with the store baits and insecticide(this is the shotgun/elephant analogy that you used earlier I would guess?) with no change in the noticeable ants around the house. Occasional ants in the house during summers past, 10-15 at most. Nothing in the winter. Recently a bunch seemed to invade the family room (25 or so over a couple of weeks) including about 6 winged ones. Now I am back to an occasional one with no winged ants. I don't know of any moisture issues. Not sure where they were coming from (maybe from the bottom of the sliding glass door?) Had roof replaced last year... nothing there. Thinking of borax and honey just to see what happens? Come to Shelby, Ohio!!!! We need you! :-) Would appreciate some good advice and direction in the meantime. Thanks!
