Thank you first of all, for this very informative site.
I also have a concern I am hoping you will be able to address. I have noticed large black ants in my yard, at first on a swing set made of wood, which we have since dismantled and gotten rid of, but also on our wooden deck. Never in large numbers, so I was not too concerned.
Recently I started noticing them in front of the sliding door that leads to the deck. Whenever I open the sliding door, or the screen, to step out to the deck, I would see one or two. I captured one in a glass and it looks like the pictures I have seen of carpenter ants, bent antenna, small waist, three body parts.
After observing them I saw to my astonishment that they were crawling into and out of a tiny space below the sill of the sliding door. There seem to be a lot of them, coming and going.
I went into my basement below the sliding door but was not able to detect anything as the basement is finished. After looking around, I found inside a closet on the opposite end of the basement, what looks like frass, and above it, a small section of wood that seems hollowed. This closet is where the water and gas lines enter the house and where the meters are located, so we rarely enter it and I have no idea how long this has been there.
I have taken two pictures but do not know how to post them.
Please advise.
