I'm in Michigan and this January we started seeing a handful of Carpenter Ants every day in our master bathroom. We hired a local carpenter who told us not to worry too much about it as they probably just woke up due to a sunny day beaming on the north side of the house. He puffed a dust behind the shower and under all the baseboards. This completely eliminated the problem.
This morning, now that the weather is finally warming up, I squashed a single winged carpenter ant (didn't see these in January). I'm wondering if I should call the exterminator again or wait to see what happens.
Since he is super reasonable, we are planning to use him on a regular basis to treat the outside anyway.
I should note that the house was built about a year ago so I'm not that concerned with structural damage. The exterminator laughed when I told him one of the big name companies told me on the phone that I needed to get them out there right away or my master bath was going to fall into the first floor of the house.
