You said "carpenter beetles." I assume you mean carpet beetles. They CAN come in from the outside, but you more commonly get them from something you brought in. Could be some stored product (processed foods, cake mixes, etc) or, naturally, carpets or some other natural materials. Yes, they can come from bird's nests, and other bugs too. Do you have rugs that are wool, or any natural material?
See if you can find your bug here: http://www.unexco.com/storprod.html
Get rid of those nests, I think your personal health and comfort is much more important than some birds, so phooey on them. You don't want ANY animals living in or on your house, no matter how "beneficial" they seem to be. Houses are for PEOPLE, not animals. With the (possible) exceptions of pets lol.
As far as CB treatment is concerned, you need to find the source. If you get rid of the source, you'll get rid of the CBs too. You may need treatment in addition to that, but it all depends. Try to pin down what room(s) they appear, keep doors closed, keep them isolated and keep a log on where you find them, that may help you with finding the source. If there IS a source, you could treat the house with an atom bomb and they'll STILL come back!
Email me at the address on this post and I'll give you some treatment options.
